LOCALE: DISCOVERING VENCE
Step into history as you walk around this hidden treasure of Roman antiquity where no new building has been erected for more than 400 years. La Vieille Ville, the old town within the walls of Vence, embraces a collection of quaint artisans' boutiques, galleries, colourful markets, tempting food shops and irresistible restaurants.
Step outside The Gatehouse and you find yourself in the Rue St. Veran. Turn right from the steps and proceed up Rue St. Veran, past Place Godeau, where many artists' studios are to be found. Rue St. Veran becomes Rue de l'Eveché at Place Godeau.
Just beyond Place Godeau is the ancient Roman Archway which takes you to Place Clemenceau, where the market is held twice-weekly between the ornate Town Hall (or Mairie, which also houses the Post Office) and the beautifully decorated Cathedral. The Cathedral was built over many centuries, from the Romanesque to the Baroque periods. Make sure you see the Latin inscriptions on the old Roman stones here. Opposite the main entrance is one of the few examples of mosaic created by the renowned artist, Marc Chagall.
Saunter across the other side of the square and enjoy a splendid coffee at Le Clemenceau, which takes its name from the Square. In sunny weather, this is a wonderful vantage point for enjoying the romantic architecture and the passing parade. Opposite the entrance is the Place Surian, where fresh fruit and vegetables are available daily. Further down you'll find one of the region's few remaining traiteurs, who produces an amazing abundance of local specialities. Go to Locale page 2 »»
