LOCALE: DISCOVERING VENCE page 3

Relax a while with a coffee or snack at one of the many terrace cafes facing the square and enjoy the activities of the passing locals, the flower sellers and men playing boules. From here, follow the ramparts back to D'alliance Française, either to the right along the Avenue Marcellin Maurel, which has numerous charming boutiques (including antiques), or to the left along the oldest section of the ramparts which affords magnificent views to the Baous and the valleys below.

This section of ramparts is lined with tilleul (limewood) trees. From the Porte du Peyra, follow the Avenue Henri Isnard 200 metres past the local cinema to discover the exquisite Chapelle des Penitents Blancs, with its ornate Moorish-influenced tower. About 100 metres further down, on the corner of Avenue Elise, is the ancient lavoir or communal washhouse with its arched walls and smooth stones. Continue along the same street, now called Avenue des Poilus, to the next intersection.

Turn right over the bridge across the valley of La Lubiane, in the direction of St. Jeannet and you will find yourself on the Avenue Henri Matisse where, after a five minute walk, you will find the simple, yet stunning, Chapelle Matisse. The Chapelle du Rosaire exhibits the pinnacle of Matissse's achievements. After visiting the Chapelle Matisse, return to the Old Town via the Chemin de la Fontette.

Walk down this narrow and very steep little road enjoying the wonderful views of the town until it joins Chemin de St. Colombe. Turn right and follow the roadway up the steep climb to the ramparts, crossing La Lubiane at the site of the olive mill.
