This is the town described by the National Geographic as one of the seven most beautiful on the French Riviera.

But it’s also a town with a history going back to Roman times and a vibrant artistic and cultural heritage which continues to thrive.

And it’s all within an easy walk of your front door.

Each studio is fully self-contained, with its own entrance from the spiral staircase.

Reviews by guests of The Vence Gatehouse Studios

Liz and Roger Enjoyed our time once again. Met some wonderful people and visited a range of restaurants. Really liked the Ambroisie nearby and the Bistro du Peyra. Went to all the usual venues and St. Jeannet a new one. We can see how all have developed over the last ten years. Had a stroll around the cemetery and spotted some of Rogers family perhaps. Thanks for another memorable experience. Fond regards
Denis and Barb.

History of The Gatehouse Studios

The Gatehouse was built into the medieval walls of Vence - a large stone on the building is carved 1592, the year the locals won out in a widespread religious war. The victory is still commemorated each year with a mass at the Cathedral.

In 1787, as a convenience to the then Bishop of Vence the Porte d’Orient or Western Gateway was cut through the city walls, right next to the Gatehouse - in this photo you can see the "new" masonry infill over the gateway.

The Gatehouse studios have been in the Badalassi family for more than sixty years and are now owned and managed by Roger Badalassi and Liz O’Shaughnessy.

When you holiday with us, you are dealing directly with the owners. Liz and Roger divide their time between Melbourne and Vence.
